Joaquim Tenreiro

(Gouveia, 1906 – Itapira, 1992)

The father of Brazilian modernism, Joaquim Tenreiro was the first designer to propose a contemporary style overseas. A great connoisseur of wood and its processing techniques, he investigated the potential of tropical woods while rediscovering some natural materials, including cane, suitable for the Brazilian climate. This allowed him to create design pieces characterized by original aesthetics and harmonious volumes. Amongst his iconic productions, his tables with retro painted glass and the Três Pés chair, a great example of wooden craftsmanship.
